2025 is going to be a big year for the gaming industry, if only because Nintendo is slated to launch its next generation of hardware with the Nintendo Switch 2.
Even with new console hardware on the market though, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella says that he still expects the
In a thread on Bluesky, Piscatella ran through a few predictions he had for the year. While he predicted that the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell “4.3 million units in the US in 2025,” later in the thread he predicts that won’t be enough to beat out the PS5.
“Expecting to see hardware constraints for several months after a significant early demand surge. And units sold will, of course, be dependent upon manufacturing capabilities and will. I still expect PlayStation 5 to rank 1st overall in hardware units sold in the US during the year.”
As Piscatella points out, Nintendo will only be able to sell as many Switches as it can make, so no matter how hot the demand gets for the Nintendo Switch 2, that will remain its limiting factor while Nintendo works out the kinks in its manufacturing line and streamlines the process over time.
PlayStation however has had the time to make its PS5 manufacturing a well-oiled machine, so it’s not the biggest stretch to think it would beat out Nintendo, even if the Nintendo Switch 2 is arguably the most highly-anticipated hardware launch in the company’s long history.
