It came down to the wire, but the Mets held off the Yankees, 3-2, in front of a sold-out crowd at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night to improve to 3-0 in the Subway Series.

Jeff McNeil crushed a two-run homer off Michael Tonkin in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 3-1 lead, but the Yankees had several opportunities to tie it or take the lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Aaron Judge stepped up to the plate with a runner on first and one out but struck out against Jake Diekman and Ben Rice grounded out to end the contest.

Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth that tied the game after Gleyber Torres put the Yankees up 1-0 in the second with his ninth home run of the season.

Alex Verdugo cut the Mets lead to one in the sixth with a run-scoring double.

The Yankees went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 runners on base.

Luis Gil tossed five innings of one-run ball for the Yankees, as did Jose Quintana for the Mets.

Box Score

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. for the Subway Series finale. It will be Gerrit Cole vs. Sean Manaea.
