The New York Mets (67-61) used a five-run ninth inning to grab an 8-3 series-opening victory over the San Diego Padres (72-57) on Thursday night at Petco Park.
Mark Vientos collected two hits and drove in three runs for the Mets, who outhit the Padres 17-7. Pete Alonso, Jesse Winker, Jose Iglesias, and Jeff McNeil each recorded multiple hits and plated runs.
Luis Severino tossed five innings of one-run ball while walking four and striking out five. Danny Young, Reed Garrett, and Phil Mation had scoreless appearances, while Huascar Brazobán allowed two runs.
The Mets go for their third straight win on Friday at 9:40 p.m. with Paul Blackburn on the hill.
