The New York Mets and starting pitcher Frankie Montas have agreed to a two-year, $34 million contract,
This marks the team’s first major signing of the offseason, addressing a rotation that has lost key arms to free agency.
Montas, 31, joins a pitching staff that includes Kodai Senga and David Peterson after Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and José Quintana entered free agency. While the Mets could still re-sign one of those pitchers, they liked Montas, who has an opt-out clause after the first year.
After missing most of 2023 due to shoulder surgery, Montas signed a one-year, $16 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds last winter before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished the season with a 4.84 ERA over 150.2 innings, recording 148 strikeouts and allowing 24 home runs.
