NY pushes new consumer protections amid federal cuts (www.fingerlakes1.com)

New York officials are proposing a bill to strengthen consumer protections as the Trump administration scales back the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The “Fostering Affordability and Integrity through Reasonable Business Practices” act would target predatory practices, including deceptive AI scams, junk fees, and unfair subscription policies.

Attorney General Letitia James and state lawmakers say the bill expands legal action against businesses engaging in “unfair” or “abusive” acts, which New York law currently does not prohibit. It also aims to stop deceptive lending and billing practices while offering protections for non-English speakers.

The proposal follows federal budget cuts that reduced the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s workforce. A lawsuit has temporarily paused the layoffs, but state leaders argue expanded protections are necessary to safeguard New Yorkers from financial exploitation.
