Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard has issued a warning about a recent surge in scam calls targeting local residents. The fraudulent scheme involves callers pretending to be law enforcement officers, often making it appear as though the call is coming directly from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.
In these scams, victims are told they have missed a court appearance, face pending charges, or have an active warrant for their arrest. The scammers then demand that the recipient either visit the sheriff’s office to be arrested or pay fines through PayPal to avoid legal action.
Sheriff Allard emphasized that the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office will never contact citizens to request money related to court appearances or other legal matters. “Please be cautious and protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes,” Allard stated in the media release. He advised residents to immediately hang up on suspicious calls and report the incident to law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the source of the scam and is working to raise awareness to prevent further victims. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and spread the word to family and friends.
