Livingston County recognizes Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, urging residents to support inclusion and accessibility for individuals with developmental disabilities.

First designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month aims to highlight both the challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities and their contributions to society. The recognition serves to educate the public on issues such as educational opportunities, healthcare access, and vocational training.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than seven million Americans and their families are affected by intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), which include impairments in physical, learning, language, and behavioral abilities. In New York, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities provides support services to over 130,000 individuals statewide.

The county’s proclamation also acknowledges the work of the Arc of the United States, a national organization dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. Locally, Arc GLOW serves Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, and Wyoming counties, offering transportation, vocational training, residential programs, and adult clinical services.

Livingston County encourages community members to learn more about available resources and advocate for inclusivity in all aspects of daily life. More information on regional programs and services can be found on Arc GLOW’s website.
