New York ranks high in FAA report on laser strikes: What does that mean?

New York is among the top states for laser strikes on aircraft in 2024, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. With 271 incidents reported so far, including 37 in July alone, New York ranks eighth nationwide in both monthly and year-to-date comparisons.

Laser strikes occur when lasers are pointed at planes, posing a significant safety risk by potentially blinding or distracting pilots. The FAA reported a record 13,304 laser strikes in 2023, a 41% increase over the previous year. Those responsible face hefty fines, with penalties reaching up to $30,000 for multiple violations.

The New York Air Route Traffic Control Center in Ronkonkoma has recorded the most incidents, with 90 reports, followed by the New York TRACON and LaGuardia Airport. Laser strikes remain a serious safety hazard, the FAA warns.
