The Last Guardian Would Have Likely Been Cancelled If It Has A Different Publisher, Says Shuhei Yoshida

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida has revealed to IGN Japan that he believes

would have been cancelled had it been published by another company instead of Sony.

According to Yoshida-san, who departed Sony earlier this month after 30 years with the PlayStation manufacturer, The Last Guardian was experiencing troubles with development, which is why details on the game went quiet for so long after its initial reveal for PS3. Much of this boiled down to problems getting Trico to move realistically, as the PS3 couldn’t handle the task and the game was only running at around 10 — 15 FPS.

As a result, development was moved to the PS4 with all programming having to be redone. However, Yoshida said that any other publisher would have probably scrapped the project, but pushed for The Last Guardian to be completed as he believed in creator Fumito Ueda’s vision and had the fans in mind.

He concluded by saying he was thrilled to have been able to re-reveal The Last Guardian at E3 2015 for the PS4, with the game finally launching in late 2016. You can read our full review here.
